Mar Menor

The large pond, the small sea, throughout history the Mar Menor has had many different names, all of which describe the phenomenon that is the large coastal lake (originally an open bay) of 170km2 of warm salt water.

Since early times, its rich waters, pleasant climate and the beauty of the area attracted many of people. The Iberians, Phoenicians and, more recently, the Arabs, have all contributed to the history of the Mar Menor. During the period of Mohammed, the 'Mar Chico', a place we now know as Los Alcázares, was used for their recreational houses.

Until the 18th century, the area was populated by a small number of inhabitants who worked in the fishing industry or in the salt mines. From the 19th century, the small villages were used more and more for recreation and relaxation by the people of La Huerta, who had their summer residence here. Even today this area is characterised by its peace and tranquility, except of course for La Manga, where there’s a lively atmosphere of tourism. The warm waters of the Mar Menor, with a maximum depth of 7 meters, provides the ideal conditions and resources for those who love sailing. Furthermore, people can enjoy waterskiing, windsurfing, kayaking, jet skiing and lots lots more

This large salt water lagoon has the ideal climatic conditions (315 days of sunshine and a yearly average temperature of 18ºC) for a great holiday or permanent home.
