La Manga del Mar Menor

La Manga del Mar Menor
The name “La Manga del Mar Menor” literally means “Sleeve of the Mar Menor” which is no surprise considering its shape: it’s a strip of about 24km in length, from Cabo de Palos to Punta del Mojón and is the natural border of the Salt water lagoon known as the Mar Menor.

La Manga was originally an open bay in the Mediterranean Sea. The remnants of volcanic activity greatly reduced the movement of sand and sediment, which, with the help of the Mediterranean currents gradually formed a strip of dunes with long beaches and a variety of plant life creating what we now know as La Manga, a small piece of land with a width varying between 200m and 1,5km.

Over time natural canals have formed connecting the two seas. The so called “Golas” allow the water of the Mediterranean in the lake.

Until the 60’s the area was untouched. Around this time La Manga was discovered as a tourist destination and underwent a transformation which urbanized the area enabling an infrastructure for tourism.

Today everything in La Manga is created to improve the visitors’ stay. There are many luxurious hotels (including 5 star hotels), a variety of shops, restaurants, marinas, sailing schools, recreational areas, supermarkets, bas, disco’s… Everything you could possibly need for the perfect stay!

In the wintertime, life in La Manga continues and the population barely fluctuates. Winter is also an ideal time for people looking for peace and quiet, without sacrificing facilities and services.

Because La Manga is enclosed between two seas, it’s an ideal place for practicing water sports. There are sail and water-ski schools with periodical courses where you can learn windsurfing or sailing a catamaran. Due to high waves on the Mediterranean side, it’s ideal for windsurfing.

San Pedro del Pinatar
San Pedro del Pinatar is located on the north side of the Mar Menor. The name originates from a small church located in a forest of pine trees, where fishermen honor the holy San Pedro.

This town is mostly know for it’s healing mud baths at Lo Pagán.

It’s history goes back to Roman times, from which they discovered a number of houses and from which they have discovered they already used the salination plants at Coterillo, who are still in use today.

This swamp land was formed by dunes and the beach of La Llana, which is the oldest of the regional parcs of Murcia and a refuge for hundreds of bird species, among others Flamingos.

Los Alcázares
Los Alcázares is located on the Mar Menor and offers 7 kilometer of coastline from Los Narejos until Punta Brava.

A large part of its economy is based on services for tourists. The name is derived from the Arabic word ' Al Ksar ',which means “house of nobles” .

The buildings in Los Alcázares were built by Arabs for their Holidays and relaxation.

With the Christian repopulation, Los Alcázares became really popular as a harbor for fishers and traders, thanks to it’s excellent strategic position.

At the start of the 20th century, people of La Huerta and Murcia began to visit this town in August because of the famous “novaries” (a series of nigh baths).

On the coast there is a silent witness of the ‘explosion’ of this place; hotel-Spa La Encarnación, that was built in 1904 and holds all peculiarities of the last century.

San Javier
The history of San Javier. situated on the coastline of the Mar Menor, began after the period where there were invasions of the Berbers. It originated around a sanctuary that was built in the 17th century and devoted to the Apostle San Francisco Javier.

In its territory, there are also the coastal towns of Santiago de La Ribera en La Manga del Mar Menor, both of great importance for tourism.

Santiago de La Ribera was founded in 1888 with the build of the sanctuary devoted to Apostle St. James.

Currently, this modern town has a beautiful boulevard but has kept its charm of an old fishing village.

San Javier also offers visitors ‘rural’ tourism, in one of the many small villages and protected areas surrounding San Javier, like Cabezo Gordo, and it makes it an excellent alternative for people who want something else than the sandy beaches .
